Killer whales, on the other hand, are super predators and have a varied diet that sometimes includes penguins. Certainly, we can not forget other great predators of the oceans: sharks and killer whales. Similar preferences were found in the Adélie penguin, yellow-eyed penguin and little penguin. To answer the question, let’s first define “most venomous.” After all, some folks may calculate venomosity using a potency-versus-size calculation; others may focus on victim statistics across the animal kingdom. The Magellanic penguin is the most numerous of the Spheniscus penguins. The chicks are cared for by both parents for 29 days and are fed every two to three days. Adults are sometimes mistaken for African penguins (Spheniscus demersus), which display a small fleshy region over each eye, or Humboldt penguins (S. humboldti), whose fleshy region encompasses the base of the beak and both eyes. [22] Prior to 2010, only roughly 10 dead penguins would be expected to be found ashore in a typical year. Their salt-excreting gland rids the salt from their bodies. By the time these birds reach about ten years of age, their feet usually become all black. ; Magellanic penguins weigh around 2.7 – 6.5 kg (5.9 – 14.3 lbs). Both parents take turns incubating the eggs, each member of the pair taking shifts that initially last two to three weeks. Adults have black backs and white abdomens. Indeed, not all penguins have the same predators. The male reclaims his burrow from the previous year and waits to reconnect with his female partner. The females are able to recognize their mates through their call alone. The chicks haven't yet grown waterproof feathers so they are more likely to die of hypothermia when they get wet during big storms. Like other species of penguins, the Magellanic penguin has very rigid wings used to swim under water. Magellanic penguin, (Spheniscus magellanicus), species of penguin (order Sphenisciformes) characterized by the presence of a broad crescent of white feathers that extends from just above each eye to the chin, a horseshoe-shaped band of black feathers that cuts across the white feathers on the chest and abdomen, and a small but noticeable region of pink flesh on the face. [5], Jellyfish including species in the genera Chrysaora and Cyanea were found to be actively sought-out food items, while they previously had been thought to be only accidentally ingested. Then, the seal seizes the moment and returns to the water, where it is agile and fast thanks to its body in the form of a torpedo, and it usually captures the penguin. A recent study of professor Dee Boersma showed that an increase of rainstorms caused by climate change affecting weather patterns has had a large impact in the chicks' population. While the penguins are swimming an extra 80 km (50 miles), their mates are sitting on a nest, unable to feed. As well as gathering together in large colonies on the beaches during the breeding season, the Magellanic penguin flocks also spend their time out at sea hunting together rather than on their own. Subspecies There are no subspecies of the Magellanic Penguin. Two eggs are laid. Many individuals live to be 20 years old, and some have lived as long as 30 years. The presence of the large continental shelf in the Atlantic Ocean lets Magellanic penguins forage far from their breeding colony. Magellanic penguins are a warm weather penguin. The breeding season begins with the arrival of adult Magellanic penguins at the breeding colonies in September and extends into late February and March when the chicks are mature enough to leave the colonies. They are highly social birds and nest in colonies. The black back and white bellies provide “countershading”, a type of camouflage from predators (such as seals); when in the water and viewed from below, the penguin’s white belly blends in with the bright sun on the water surface; when in the water and viewed from above, the black coloring blends in with the dark ocean waters. Zoo representatives from around the world have adopted Magellanic penguin hatchlings and bred them in captivity,[citation needed] which serves to build insurance populations (though these animals are unable to participate in seasonal migration events or forage for prey, unlike wild populations). Magellanic penguins reach sexual maturity as early as age three, but most females do not breed until age four, and most males do not breed until age five. [22] In June 2012, higher numbers were recorded, with 742 Magellanic penguins discovered in a decomposed state on the shores of Brazil. Predators and prey. Magellanic Penguins become sexually mature between 2 and 3 years of age. The Magellanic penguin is a medium sized penguin that can grow up to 76cm in height. The species is also exposed to spills which occur in other countries as penguins follow their annual migratory paths. Despite being classed as a threatened species, the Magellanic penguin is one of the most numerous of all of these types of penguin. [11], Millions of these penguins still live on the coasts of Argentina and Chile, but the species is classified as Near Threatened and decreasing. Like most penguins, they exhibit counter shading – i.e., a dark brown or black-colored dorsal side (back) and a silvery white colored ventral side (belly). [7] Nests are built under bushes or in burrows.
