A recent innovation has been the development of SonarKids which provides music, workshops and classes for children during the Festival days, giving them the opportunity of both listening to and participating in some exciting projects. "In total, the festival featured more than 40 international, regional and local DJs and live acts – including 11 making their HK debut – as Sónar once again confirmed its reputation as the world's best electronic music festival.[7]. Watch on our Facebook page on Thursday and Friday afternoon. Necessary cookies are absolutely essential for the website to function properly. Sónar was founded in Barcelona in 1994 as the “Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art”, by music journalist Ricard Robles and musicians and visual artists Enric Palau and Sergio Caballero. Because the festival attracts a rather eclectic crowd, it’s often hard to pinpoint what your average Sónar festival-goer looks like, though you will see many late twenty-somethings and early thirty-somethings, mostly urban types, with a penchant for late-night raves and early electronica. The project involves 35 artists linked to the festival, from diverse musical origins and discourses. Directed by Sergio Caballero since the first festival in 1994, Sónar's visual image is an intrinsic part of the festival's identity. The first edition of the festival, called Sónar by Day, took place right in the centre of the city at the CCCB (Contemporary Culture Centre of Barcelona) while Sónar by Night was held at the historic Sala Apolo nightclub in Poble Sec. As well as the flagship event in Barcelona, Sónar hosts events around the world, with annual festivals currently taking place in Bogota, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, Reykjavik and Istanbul. It’s worth knowing that the cost of a Sonar by Night ticket automatically includes a free pass for the special shuttle bus which ferries back and forth from Plaça de les Drassanes throughout the night. With the late 1990s came considerable growth: from 18,000 visitors in 1996 to 28,000 in 1997, 38,000 in 1998, 43,000 in 1999 and over 53,000 in 2000. Artists close to the festival who submitted specially created pieces of music include Jean-Michel Jarre, Autechre, Squarepusher, Nina Kraviz, The Black Madonna, Matmos, Laurent Garnier and Olafur Arnalds. The first festival took place on 2, 3 and 4 June at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (Sónar by Day) and the Apolo club (Sónar by Night), with performances by Holger Czukay, Mixmaster Morris, Laurent Garnier, Sven Väth, Atom Heart, and Trans Global Underground, among others. Positioned at the cutting edge of the electronic music landscape and it's interactions with digital culture, Sónar is able to unite established artists with emerging talent, in all areas of musical and audiovisual production. : superstrings, paul kalkbrenner, peggy gou & palms trax, perel, petite noir, phran, push 1 stop & wiklow: membrane, quiet ensemble - back symphony, red axes live, rejjie snow, ross from friends, rrucculla, saoirse, sebastian, sevdaliza - the great hope design, sheck wes, shelly, shiva feshareki, sho madjozi, skepta, $kyhook, slikback, snakehips, territoire, the matthew herbert brexit big band, theo parrish, titi calor, tutu, underworld, vince staples, virgen maria, vōx, waajeed, yakamoto kotzuga, ylia, 700 Bliss.
