The dates of Lent, the season of penance and prayer before Easter, change every year. The first day of Lent is called Ash Wednesday. This can be considered a trick question since the answer depends on your definition of Lent, which can be different based on the church you follow. But before Lent even begins, there's Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent, which is a time to "clean the soul," according to the BBC. Christians do not fast on Sundays so Lent or "Lenten Fast" is only 40 days because the Sunday's during Lent are not fasting days. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday the day before Easter Sunday with 46 total days between these two days. There is not a simple answer. Ash Wednesday is the day after Shrove Tuesday, which in the UK is more commonly known as Pancake Day. Lent is the period of forty days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar, traditionally a time of fasting and reflection. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which is always held 46 days (40 fasting days and 6 Sundays) before Easter Sunday. There are two common definitions of Lent, and the dates of the season will depend on which is used. The Lenten season will begin with Ash Wednesday on February 17th, 2021; and if you are following the 40 days tradition, Lent will end on Holy Saturday, April 3rd, 2021. This year, Lent begins on Wednesday, February 26, 2020. When does Lent start?

Some people believe Lent ends on Palm Sunday or the Saturday before Palm Sunday, others say Holy Thursday, and some say Holy Saturday. When does Lent start? Some Catholics define Lent as the period of the Lenten fast; others define Lent as a liturgical season. What is the simple answer?

Because Lent follows the liturgical calendar, the exact date that Lent falls each year changes. It is preceded by Shrove Tuesday and begins with Ash Wednesday.
